Why Angry Bird U So Angry?

"You seen any eggs around?"

With millions of copies sold, Angry Birds is undoubtedly one of the most successful casual games to be created so far. (Still remember Plants vs Zombies? Oh well)

I am yet to play Angry Birds, but from the testimonials of my friends I think I should refrain from touching this game lest I will be addicted to it.

Addiction to this? I can't fathom doing something this repetitive, but better to be safe.

Anyway, I did some readings on the Internet about Angry Birds, and I found out that Angry Birds has a historical reference behind the whole idea!

Why, of course you would have never thought of that. You think this is just another mindless casual game, uh, well maybe the developers intended it to be, but I doubted it with the uncanny resemblance to one of the historical events in human (or animal) history. Do you know what it is? One word - Dodo.

What dodo?
This dodo.

Let me tell you a story, if you haven't heard it already. Come, darken your lights, cuddle around, light a candle. Ready? Just kidding lah, not a ghost story also. Anyway...

Long time ago, there was a species of birds living in an island isolated from the whole world, living in bliss, ignorant of what is happening (guess this is why they said ignorance is a bliss). They never had to face any predators, so they never had the need to run very fast or fly. Evolution took their flight away, and directed their energy elsewhere (such as doing you-know-what all day, in numbers).

So they lived happily for thousands of years. They eat, they make love, they lay eggs. Such is the simple life of the dodo birds. Until one day in the 16th century (1500s ah, don't misread it), the Dutch came. Then you heard the rest of the story.

The island was named Mauritius, an island off the island of Madagascar. Over the next century, many sailors came. The dodo, living in peace for years, lost their natural instinct to escape from predators. They were fearless of the humans, so naturally, easy capture means easy food. Humans fed on these dodos by tons whenever they made a stop at this island. That is probably one of the reasons dodo became extinct within about a hundred years from the first encounter.

Then came one of the key factors that has a direct link to Angry Birds - pigs!

Allow me to explain. Dodos as you know, had no natural predators. They lay their eggs on the ground. But when the human came, they brought in other animals into the island ecosystem. One of them is - you guessed it - pig.

The pigs contributed as much if not more to the extinction of dodo, by eating their eggs. Lots of them.

This took the dodo too fast for them to have any evolutionary adaptations, and in the end, the last dodo was sighted in 1688 (date is being disputed, but its around that lah.).

That's it? You ask. That's all it took for me to link them together? Well, there are more to it. I think I should lay it out for you to see. I'm sure you will be convinced.

First: Angry Birds and Dodos can't fly

Slingshot is there for obvious reasons.

Why of course. Why else? WHY ELSE? Slingshot?!

Second: Both lay their eggs on the ground.

Dodo with eggs.

Happy Angry Birds with eggs.

Third: Pigs stole their eggs.

Like I mentioned for the dodo above, in the game the pigs stole and wanted to to eat the eggs too.

Pigs did it.

It is no wonder the Angry Birds are real angry. It's extinction we were talking about for F's sake. So the next time you wonder "Angry Birds, Y U so angry lah?" You can think about this piece of event in history.

Oh yes. Don't mess with them. They'd rather explode and die than to let you steal their eggs, though I still don't know what is the historical significance in that.

I think I should end here. Till next time, happy Angry Bird-ing

Cheers~

People: Bath Boys Comedy

Comedy is an essential part of Internet culture (well, besides porn). On YouTube, comedy channel rakes in the most subscribers on YouTube (didn't do fact check, but I presume that is the case when most top subscribed channels are listed under 'humor').

Today, let's talk about one of the most underrated channels on YouTube - Bath Boys Comedy.

With only about 3,600 subscribers, they are really under appreciated for the quality videos they produce. If I were to name the funniest channel on YouTube, I would give it to Bath Boys.

Although relatively unknown, they got their little shot at fame when they made a parody trailer to the then-new movie Inception.

Oh well. Nothing else I can tell you about them. You would have to watch all their videos to judge whether they are really underrated. Find them below!

Till next time (I am entering a very busy two-week period, forgive me for not posting and writing as much as I want to), cheers~

Of Facebook, Birthday wishes, and April Fool's Day

You just got punk'd

And so yesterday was April Fool's Day. I must admit I had never paid any particular attention to this day, nor do I treat it any different. But this year it's a little bit different, with the rise of Facebook usage among the netizens, I thought it would be interesting to do an experiment, particularly on the birthday notification function of Facebook.

I remember a few months ago me and a whole group of people from TEDxYouthKL were having a lunch celebration at TGI Fridays at the Gardens. So one of us came out with this idea of setting our birthday to the 1st if April this year, just for the "lulz". We wanted to see how many birthday wishes we could get.

And so we did, the few of us, setting our birthday to the 1st of April, some even set it a few days before (I did) just for it to seem more real.

The morning of the 1st, I logged in to find a whole wall of birthday wishes. To my surprise, I found out that there were at least 20 of my friends who shared the same "birthday" with me. I remember thinking - while still about 10am in the morning, with more than 40+ wishes - that this would be a funny day.

Funny day indeed it was. By the afternoon, I already have more than a hundred wishes. And I was laughing, amused by how many people were wishing me without knowing that it wasn't really my birthday, even if (if they took the effort to scroll down just a little to see) some of my friends were trolling on my way saying it's not my real birthday.

But then I grew a bit worried (or rather, disturbed), not because I was afraid that there are people who would take the joke too seriously (there were, as a matter of fact); it was because I felt like something is wrong with this.
Who you gonna call?
What exactly was wrong? Hmm....

As of today, I have a total of 190 birthday wishes on my Facebook wall. How did it get to 190? That is a lot of people!

And how many birthday wishes did I get from my friends, face-to-face? None. That's it. NONE. So what does this tell us?

I think this phenomenon speaks volume about how human interactions had changed over the last few years. It seems like people are relying too much on Facebook (I am guilty of this as well), which cannot be blamed when it does really brought much convenience to the way we connect with each other.

But to further extend the "abuse" to wishing other people "happy birthday"? I think that is just a tad too much. Whatever happened to the sincere and personalized wishes, when you really mean it when you wish your friends a happy birthday? But no, some people have this daily routine of looking up the list of people on the birthday notification, copy and paste "Happy Birthday ^^" on each of their wall, as if they meant it, as if they are obliged to do it.

Of course, not all people does that. I don't. And for some people, Facebook wishes may be the only viable choice (oversea, expensive call rate).

Maybe they are just being polite wishing everyone, but to be honest, some people may find it a bit annoying. I mean, do you really think they give a care if you sent wish or not?

That's something to think about.

Oh, and to those people who took the joke seriously. Come on man, you need a life. Like seriously. Getting upset over a Facebook prank is just too... Um... lulz... idk... Oh well... Not that I am bothered.

I guess that's all for today.

Oh, and if you are interested to know when is my real birthday (I'm being a bit narcissist here, of course you are not, why would you want to know?), just come to be and ask me personally ok? I don't care if you think I am a privacy freak, or hypocrite, or whatever. For me it's a sign of real friendship (knowing my birthday), that you really care enough to want to know. Putting it up on Facebook to let everyone know is just asking for unwanted attention on your birthday, unless you really like attention, that's another matter altogether.

Don't mind me. This is Brain Stew.

Till next time, cheers~
